Summer Work Experience

Students Gaining Professional Skills

This program helps secondary and post-secondary students acquire the skills to successfully transition to the labour market through summer work experiences.

We understand that the youth of Eeyou Istchee are the future. Because of this, we aim to support youth through innovative programs designed to help them develop the life skills and work experience necessary to enter the labour market.

The Summer Work Experience program will help to cover the costs of participants wages for those that intend to return to their studies in the Fall. This will allow employers to help the youth of their community to build their resumes, save for the future and grow into effective workers.

FOR APPLICANTS

Organizations

ASD will assist employers by subsidizing wages for eligible participants. Other eligible expenses include mandatory employment related costs (MERCs), assistance for participants with disabilities and other costs directly related to the work experience.

Employers understand that education and training is essential to the development of an effective worker, but they also understand that experience is what allows that education and training to mature into its greatest potential.

Employers that can guarantee a minimum of 80 hours of work per participant are eligible to apply for funding to help subsidize the wages of summer students.

FOR PARTICIPANTS

Youth

Ask any youth entering the job market, and they’ll tell you that employers want someone with experience.

The Summer Work Experience program is the perfect opportunity for you to begin building that body of experience without having to wait until you’ve graduated. Spend your summers improving your resume and earning some cash, as well.

As long as you were a full time student in the previous school year, and intend to return on a full-time basis, you are eligible for funding under this program. With support from ASD, your prospective employer will be excited by the opportunity to take a chance on someone who is still building their resume and their experience.

Be sure to mention this program when you are applying for summer jobs. You never know what kind of opportunities await, and what kind of jobs are out there. And it never hurts to have a bit of money in the bank when you return to your studies in the fall!
