SUMMARY OF THE POSITION

Person who does design, guidance, counseling, implementation, analysis and assessment work in one or more social programs.

SPECIFIC FUNCTIONS

The social worker Awash for the CMC Awash provides social services and support to children in the 0-9 age group and their family in order to improve their social and psychological functioning and therefore, maximize their well-being.

The person works in the context of the Awash program which is a whole set of integrated services for perinatal and early childhood care. These services include the maternal and child health program (MCHP), psychosocial support, nutrition and breastfeeding support, immunization, oral health, midwifery program, and other related programs. These activities are offered through different means: CMC consultation, home visiting, group activities and accompaniment to community resources.

  • Works as part of an interdisciplinary team and more specifically in close partnership with Community Health Representative (CHR), Nurse, Social Assistance Technician, Doctor, Nutritionist, Midwives, and various other community health services and staff;
  • Carries out psychosocial assessment, care, counselling, information and referral services for women and family in order to resolve psychosocial and emotional problems and allow the clienteles to increase their self-reliance, quality of life and social integration;
  • Supports different community working relationships including participation, liaison and consultation;
  • Collaborates in the application of public health recommendations;
  • Carries out all other related tasks upon the request of her/his immediate supervisor.

REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work;
  • Member in good standing of the Ordre professionnel des travailleurs sociaux et des thérapeutes conjugaux et familiaux du Québec (OTSTCFQ

EXPERIENCE

  • Two (2) years of relevant experience in social work (an asset).

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES

  • Good understanding of psychosocial issues;
  • Knowledge of Cree culture, social/health issues and Eenou/Eeyou Pimaatsiiun healing practices and paradigms is an asset;
  • Ability to identify and analyze clientele needs;
  • Ability to communicate theoretical and practical knowledge, as applied to coaching and training;
  • Excellent critical thinking, synthesis, organizational and decision-making skills;
  • Sense of accountability, resourcefulness and autonomy;
  • Teamwork skills.

LANGUAGE

  • Fluent in English;
  • Fluency in Cree or French is an asset.

OTHER

  • May be required for on-call periods;
  • Travel occasionally for trainings

ABOUT US

The Cree Board of Health and Social Services of James Bay is responsible for providing health and social services for all persons residing permanently or temporarily in the Eeyou Istchee region, the Cree Territory of James Bay. It is a remote region in northern Quebec made up of nine communities of the Cree Nation, an Indigenous population of nearly 18,000 people.

The health and social services offered are front-line services provided in the nine local CMCs as well as second-line services through the regional hospital centre in Chisasibi. When second- and third–line services cannot be provided in the community, patients are transported to institutions affiliated with McGill University’s Réseau Universitaire Intégré de Santé (RUIS).
