Job Description

Position: Metallurgist

Department: Process plant

Schedule: 14 days of work followed by 14 days off

Location: Renard Mine

Home ports : Val d’Or, Chibougamau – Chapais, St-Hubert and Quebec airports

 

Stornoway Diamonds is seeking a Metallurgist to join our team. Reporting to the Senior Metallurgist, the Metallurgist is responsible for supervising the laboratory operators and providing metallurgical expertise to ensure that the performance of the plant is efficient and optimal, in a safe and cost effective manner.

Without limitation, the primary duties and responsibilities are:

  • Ensure metallurgical standards are met at the plant;
  • Perform daily production reports and process follow-ups;
  • Ensure that the plant design criteria, screen mesh opening, recirculation load, mill gaps and water balance are optimal;
  • Ensures a safe working environment by ensuring environmental, safety, engineering and mining law requirements are met;
  • Contribute to process quality by using components that meet established metallurgical standards in routine and project work;
  • Liaise with Geology, Technical Services and Mining Engineering departments;
  • Assist in the development and updating of the sampling program and laboratory procedures;
  • Analyze, interpret and communicate laboratory results;
  • Participate in the training of laboratory operators and plant operators;
  • Review and analyze key production QA/QC statistical data;
  • Investigate process and procedure improvements;
  • Perform project specific tasks;
  • Provide assistance to the Senior Metallurgist in the preparation of the annual budget;
  • Maintain and operate the process plant laboratory;
  • Ensure compliance with health and safety and environmental regulations in the workplace.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in materials engineering, metallurgy or chemistry;
  • 3 to 5 years experience in a similar job;
  • Be a member of the Ordre des ingénieurs du Québec;
  • Experience in the diamond or mineral processing industry (an asset);
  • Ability to work in a team and leadership skills;
  • Autonomy and resourcefulness;
  • Ability to manage stress and work effectively and proactively to meet tight deadlines;
  • Excellent communication, planning, organization, prioritization and execution skills;
  • Written and oral communication skills in English and French required;
  • Good knowledge of Microsoft Office software (Excel, Word, PowerPoint);
  • Familiarity with WHMIS and Material Safety Data Sheets;
  • Familiarity with PFD, P&ID, and SCADA (an asset);
  • Familiarity with GuideTI (an asset);
  • Versatility and flexibility in terms of tasks;
  • Ability to work on a remote mine site on a fly-in/fly-out basis;
  • Interest and ability to work in a multicultural and multidisciplinary environment;
  • Interest in doing field work in the plant and equipment inspections;
  • Strong desire to learn and develop skills;
  • Exemplary attitude towards health and safety at all times;
  • Valid driver’s license
