Job Description

Department: Forestry
Location: Waswanipi
Salary Grade 5: (Min. $51,223.00 – Max. $68,383.00)
Status: Permanent

Core Functions

Under the general direction of the Forestry Planner / GIS Data Specialist, the GIS Analyst is responsible for updating digital data received or purchased, producing maps, conducting statistical calculations and assisting the Cree Joint Working Groups with Geographic Information System (GIS) training.

Functional Responsibilities

  • Assist the Forestry Planner/GIS Data Specialist in the management of the Department’s digital data, including the upgrading of federal, provincial and local Cree governments or in-house information.
  • Collaborate with the Ministère des Forêts, de la Faune et des Parcs (MFFP) in the monitoring and management of the database for Category II Lands and cooperate with MFFP for the Category III Lands data.
  • Research and acquire new digital data from various sources.
  • Compute statistical data and incorporate this data into GIS by producing maps or publishing reports.
  • Assist the Forestry Planner/GIS Data Specialist in the development and maintenance of a forestry management Mapping Service website (i.e. ArcGIS Online) by updating data or altering the website and providing tutorials relevant to the website application.
  • Provide forestry maps to assist the Cree Forestry Joint Working Group members.
  • Provide one-on-one or group GIS training to Cree Forestry Joint Working Group members to facilitate their use of government data concerning forestry.
  • Travel to Cree communities to assist in GIS training and/or attend meetings relevant to forestry, geographical information systems and mapping.
  • Collaborate continuously with Cree communities concerning trapline modifications and/or update and respond to special external projects.
  • Collaborate with other members of the Cree Nation Forestry Department in fulfilling its GIS needs

Administrative Responsibilities

  • Perform other related tasks as requested by the Forestry Planner / GIS Data Specialist and Director of Forestry

 

Other Responsibilities

  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge and skills in area(s) of responsibility.
  • Perform other duties as required.

Education

  • College Diploma in Environmental Studies, Geography or a related field.

Experience

  • One to three years of relevant work experience.

Language

  • Written knowledge of English and French.
  • Fluency in English and French.
  • Fluency in Cree is an asset.

Knowledge and Abilities

  • Good cartography skills with appropriate software applications (ArcGIS, Google Earth).
  • Good analytical skills.
  • Good judgment and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work well both independently and in a team environment.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Good organizational skills and ability to coordinate multiple tasks and respect deadlines.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office.

 

Additional Requirements

  • Typical office setting where there are no unusual physical demands.
  • Willingness to travel.

The Cree Nation Government may, at its discretion, waive any or all of the aforementioned requirements if a suitable candidate who is a JBNQA beneficiary accepts to follow a training plan determined by the Cree Nation Government as a condition of employment.
