NATURE OF WORK
The Counselor in Academic Training reports to the Coordinator of Student Success whose responsibilities and role include developing, facilitating, and monitoring plans and strategies that improve student success. In addition to the development, implementation and support of boardwide strategies, programs, and tools that promote student success, they also work in collaboration with school leadership and other Counselors in Academic Training and/or Guidance Counselors on individual student files. As an Academic Counselor, they would provide assistance to students on the development of an educational and career plan, in the case where there are additional needs for academic or guidance support in a school.
CHARACTERISTIC FUNCTIONS
Collaborates with guidance counsellors, counsellors in Academic Training, school leaders, Post Secondary Student Services (PSSS) and Sabtuan Adult Education Services (SAES) in the development and implementation of plans and tools related to student success.
Review transcripts and students’ records in collaboration with the Coordinator of Student Success, Coordinator of Student Data Management, and school principals, vice-principals, guidance counsellors and counsellors in academic training quarterly to align programs and course offerings that will meet the needs of students;
Collaborates and facilitates meetings, training, and shared tool development for student success with guidance and academic counsellors.
Development and implementation of a guidance counselling approach aligned with ACGC that is culturally relevant for our Cree students.
Recommend additional programs, measures, and initiatives that will allow for enriched and diverse programming for students throughout the Board.
Performs duties related to the development of the objectives and policies of the guidance service with due consideration for the general administrative and education policies in effect at the level of the school or school board.
Must maintain close contact with the labour market, the administrative staff, and with other institutions involved in the guidance of students.
Prepares and keeps up to date student files on questions relating to his field.
Support schools and students directly in communities when there is a Guidance or Academic Counsellor in Training position vacant.
Analyses student files and transcripts for summer school and other examination retake sessions.
Carries out any other task or function identified by the Coordinator of Student Success.
MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Undergraduate degree in a relevant field of study, preferably in academic training or guidance counselling.
Fluency in English is required.
Fluency in French is an asset.
Knowledge of the Cree Language a definite asset.
Be a member of the Ordre des conseillers et conseillères d’orientation du Québec would be an asset.
Knowledge of the Academic and Career Guidance Content (ACGC) would be an asset.
EMPLOYMENT CONDITIONS
Regular full-time position
35 hrs/week
Salary: $24.46/h to $40.98/h
Northern Allowance: $8,484.00 – $13,573.00
