SUMMARY OF THE POSITION

Person who participates in identifying the needs of the population and uses the appropriate techniques to implement the various community action programs. She/he acts as a resource person for community groups.

SPEFICIC FUNCTIONS:

The National Native Alcohol & Drug Addiction Program (NNADAP) worker develops and runs prevention, intervention and aftercare services and activities that aim to reduce or prevent alcohol and drug addiction in Eeyou Istchee. More specifically:

  • Helps individuals and families that may be struggling with substance use by establishing and running education, awareness and prevention initiatives; 
  • Collaborates with regional and local partners to reduce substance abuse and dependencies, and thereby contribute to the well-being of Cree individuals, families, and communities; 
  • Organizes, coordinates and implements a range of prevention, intervention and aftercare activities that are suited for the individual such as: workshops, recreation activities, discussion groups, public awareness campaigns, spiritual and cultural programs’ activities and other community activities related to drug and alcohol abuse; 
  • Participates in school programs and cultural events; 
  • Participates actively in aftercare activities that includes crisis intervention, counselling services, sharing circles and support groups, support visits and referrals to other services, including detox and medical treatments, social services, and band services; 
  • Collaborate with all the age group departments and with various organizations to foster common objectives and inspire prevention and awareness within the community;

REQUIREMENTS

Education:

  • Must have a diploma of college studies in social work techniques or social service techniques or another appropriate specialization such as in the field of drug and alcohol prevention from a school recognized by the Ministère de l’Éducation, du Loisir et du Sport. 
  • This job title also includes those who, after acquiring relevant experience, have a certificate of college studies in social work techniques or social service techniques. 
  • Applicants with an attestation of college studies in Educators in Native Childcare Services or Special Needs Education aboriginal and Inuit children may be considered.

Knowledge and Abilities:

  • Ability to communicate with groups and individuals; 
  • Interest to work in multidisciplinary teams; 
  • Initiative, dynamism and a sense of responsibility;
  • Proper knowledge of the community social environment; 
  • Knowledge of Cree culture and social/health issues in Eeyou Istchee; 
  • Knowledge of Eenou/Eeyou Pimaatsiiun healing practices and paradigms is an asset; 
  • Ability to communicate with people, to run interviews and to establish and maintain a “helping relationship with beneficiaries”; 
  • Ability to work in collaboration with CMC community workers, NNADAP workers and other medical social services staff and organisms within and outside the community; 
  • Demonstrated skills in counseling and ability to work in crisis situations; 
  • Must be sensitive and knowledgeable of drug and Alcohol Addiction issues; 
  • Excellent clinical judgement; 
  • Must show initiative, be dynamic, exhibit responsibility and professionalism;

Language:

  • Fluent in Cree and English;
  • Fluency in French is an asset.
