Your role

Are you interested in telling the stories of the Cree people, in our language? Do you want to work with a dedicated team of professionals who share your passion?

CBC North’s Cree unit is looking for an announcer/interviewer to be the voice of Winschgaoug, the Cree language radio program broadcast weekdays from 8 to 9 a.m. in Eeyou Istchee and online.

You would greet listeners each morning, sharing the latest news, interviews, music and more to East Cree speakers.

Tasks:

• Stay abreast of news events in the areas covered by the program and maintain ties with different sources.
• During production meetings, propose program content, angles and sources.
• Do the necessary research and conduct pre-interviews as needed.
• Write or adapt program scripts for interviews and other program content.
• Conduct taped or live interviews. Perform basic editing tasks for radio.
• When assigned, write up interviews for digital or social platforms.
• Participate in other programs. Occasionally host special programs.
• Participate in community outreach on behalf of CBC.
• Perform all other related tasks as needed.

We are looking for a candidate with the following:

• A high school education or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
• Relevant experience in radio or a newsroom environment.
• Fluency in East Cree.
• Good knowledge of spoken and written English.
• Knowledge of French is considered an asset.
• Knowledge of and interest in Indigenous issues and events.
• Knowledge of regional and national current affairs as they relate to the James Bay Cree.
• Good grasp of interview techniques.
• A curious and engaging on-air personality and a strong connection with the audience.
• The ability to analyze, synthesize and think critically.
• The ability to work under pressure.
