Your role
We are seeking a fluent Cree language speaker who knows the people and priorities of Eeyou Istchee to be the new announcer-interviewer of Eyou Dipajimoon.  Eyou Dipajimoon is the midday, Cree-language radio program on CBC Radio One that sets out to explore issues, connect people, and mark important events in the James Bay Cree communities. From 12:00 to 1:00 p.m. weekdays, the announcer-interviewer speaks with members and leaders of the Cree communities about the stories and topics affecting the people of Eeyou Istchee.

The announcer-interviewer works as part of the CBC North Cree Unit based in Montreal.

Description of Duties

  • Keep up with news and events in Eeyou Istchee
  • Pitch and develop program topics. Help define program goals
  • 3Develop program content (search for and select music; research your subjects and interviews; choose guests; conduct pre-interviews and conduct interviews for the program)
  • Write or adapt intros and question-lines for the program
  • Host the program (read copy, improvise, conduct interviews, and ensure that the various program segments flow together smoothly)
  • Depending on the assignment, prepare reports: check facts; select and perform basic editing of clips, interviews and reports; write copy; and do narration
  • Translate and adapt news copy into the Cree language live
  • Carry out all other related tasks as needed

Job Requirements

  • A high school education or an acceptable combination of education and/or experience
  • Relevant 1-3 years’ experience appropriate to radio, current affairs or a newsroom environment
  • Very good knowledge of the broadcast language: James Bay Eastern Cree
  • Good knowledge of English and French
  • Good general knowledge
  • Good knowledge of events and news affecting the Cree nation and Indigenous people in Quebec
  • Good knowledge of current events

Selected candidates will be subject to the following:
