The Cree Nation of Eastmain is one of four Cree communities located on the eastern shore of James Bay near the south shore of the Eastmain River. With a population reaching nearly 800 people, the main economic activity of the community is the service sector. As a very dynamic community, Eastmain is looking to develop itself and diversify its activities in various domains. Committed to improving the lives of its community members, Eastmain is working on improving all the services currently offered to the population as well as implementing new services.

Job Summary
The Senior Mechanic is responsible for the verification, repair, and maintenance of vehicles, machinery, and equipment (heavy and light) for the Cree Nation of Eastmain, to ensure that resources are maintained according to quality standards and are in safe working order.

Key Responsibilities

  • Work with the Public Works Supervisor, with other departments, as well as with external contractors (as applicable), to plan repair projects when required.
  • Participate in the development and implementation of a preventive maintenance and repair program that meets safety standards and regulations. Plan work procedures using manufacturer’s charts, technical manuals, and experience.
  • Ensure that the vehicles and equipment of the Cree Nation of Eastmain are kept always maintained and in safe running order.
  • Perform all the repairs and maintenance (current and preventative) on vehicles, machinery, and equipment (heavy and light) such as aligning brakes, installing accessories, and replacing parts. Notify the supervisor of any issues.
  • Conduct periodic inspections on vehicles and industrial equipment to ensure that they are in good condition and comply with safety standards.
  • Determine which parts require maintenance or replacement and plan work procedures using manufacturer’s charts, technical manuals, and experience.
  • Ensure that part numbers and repairs made are recorded, and supervise scheduled maintenance service, such as oil changes, lubrications, and tune-ups.
  • Ensure availability of parts and materials required for repairs. Keep the Supervisor informed about purchasing needs.
  • Maintain and increase knowledge and skills through attendance at meetings, conferences, and training seminars
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge and skills in area(s) of responsibility.
  • Perform other duties as required.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma with additional training (four-year motor vehicle mechanic apprenticeship program)
  • Motor vehicle trade certificate as recommended by Provincial Standards for mechanics
  • Valid class 1 driver’s licence
  • Three to five years of relevant experience

*Any combination of experience and education will be considered. Compulsory training will be provided.

Qualification

  • Fluency in Cree and English
  • Written knowledge of English
  • Fluency in French is an asset
  • Knowledge of basic safety precautions and standards
  • Working knowledge of computers and Microsoft Office products
  • Work may require frequent considerable physical effort

Working conditions

  • Permanent full-time position
  • 35 hours per week
  • Attendance may be required at odd hours and weekends to perform emergency repairs
  • Base salary range: 65k-81k based on experience
